PRESENTATION SYNOPSIS:
Ceramic additive manufacturing is rapidly expanding the possibilities for producing complex, highly customized components across biomedical, industrial, and advanced technology markets. The ceramic additive manufacturing industry is projected to grow at 25% each year, reaching $1.5B by 2035(1). As 3D printing evolves from prototyping toward higher-volume commercial applications, the consistency and performance of the ceramic feedstock powders becomes increasingly important to the success of the entire manufacturing process.
This presentation will explore the role of engineered ceramic powders in 3D printing, with particular emphasis on formulations used to create ceramic bioinks. While the printing process often receives significant attention, the powder is the foundation of the entire system. Particle size distribution, morphology, purity, surface characteristics, and lot-to-lot consistency can directly influence viscosity, solids loading, printing behavior, sintering, and ultimately the functionality and reliability of the finished component.
Key considerations will include how variations in powder characteristics can affect processing performance and final-part properties, and why maintaining consistent powder specifications is essential for reproducible 3D printing.
Particular attention will be given to hydroxyapatite and other bioceramic materials, where powder consistency is especially important for developing functional components for biomedical applications. As ceramic additive manufacturing continues to expand into new markets, establishing reliable powder specifications and robust powder-processing strategies will be essential for moving from successful individual prints to repeatable, scalable manufacturing.
